Top shopping credit cards in Q3 2017
It’s almost the Holiday season, and now’s an ideal time to get a shopping credit card. Trouble is, there are about a million choices and promos at this time of year. Don’t panic though – the ever reliable GoBear team has picked the top performers to consider:
1. HSBC Advance Credit Card
The HSBC Advance card provides 2.5 per cent cashback on all shopping expenses, with a minimum spend of $2,000 per month (otherwise, you still get at least 1.5 per cent cashback). If you’re already an HSBC Advance Banking client, you get a further one per cent.
There’s a cashback cap of $70 per month, but this goes up to $125 if you have an HSBC Advance Banking account.
What really makes this card stick out is the limited time promotion: if you’re signing up with HSBC for the first time, you can choose between getting $120 cashback instantly, or an American Tourister Caravan (70cm) luggage carrier, worth $260. Perfect for that year-end trip or spree.
2. Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback Credit Card
Are you sick of cashback caps? Tired of splitting bills through two or three cards to maximise cashback? Then get the Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback Credit Card.
As its name implies, you get unlimited 1.5 per cent cashback on everything – shopping, dining, petrol, groceries, overseas spending…just everything. This makes it perfect for people who only want to have and use one card.
On top of that, this card lets you pay for retail purchases over $500 with interest-free instalment plans. With a one time service fee, you can split the purchase into six or 12 month interest-free instalments.
You’ll find it easier to get to the mall too – until September 2018, you’ll get 20 per cent cashback off Uber rides, to a maximum of $50 a month, with a minimum spend of $900 a month.
If you’re a first time Standard Chartered customer, you also get $138 cashback immediately ($100 if you sign up via other channels, so be sure to use GoBear.com).
3. Citibank Citi Rewards Card
The Citi Rewards card gives you 10 Citi Dollars per $1 spent, for shopping. Citi Dollars can be redeemed for various rewards, like dining vouchers and movie tickets.
Right now, it’s easier than ever to rack up these reward points: you get double the usual (20 Citi Dollars) for every $1 spent at Zalora, plus an additional 20 per cent off. Shopping rewards are capped at 120,000 Citi Dollars per year.
Besides shopping rewards, you get 1 Citi Dollar for every $1 spent, on dining, petrol, entertainment, overseas spending…everything, really, so the Citi Dollars rack up fast.
If you apply now, you’ll get instant cashback of $20 per month, for the next six months; that’s $120 in your pocket for free. And if you apply before April 2018, you’ll get $70 worth of Grab rides, within 30 days of applying.
4. American Express True Cashback Card
The American Express True Cashback Card gives you 1.5 per cent cashback on everything, with no limit. Like the Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback card in point 2, this is convenient for shoppers who only want to hold one card.
If you intend to give a supplementary card to someone, you’ll get a $20 CapitaVoucher (usable at CapitaLand malls), for each of the first two supplementary cards.
There’s an added kicker: for the first six months upon approval, cardholders can get double the cashback (three per cent), if they charge at least $5,000 to the card. This is ideal if you’re planning on big ticket purchases, like furnishing your new living room, or buying an engagement ring.
Oh, and if you’re new to American Express, you’ll also get an $80 Starbucks card upon application.
5. American Express CapitaCard
If you go to CapitaLand malls a lot, this specialised credit card may be the best pick for you. You can find a list of CapitaLand malls here.
You get 30 STAR$ per $1 spent at CapitaLand malls, or 5 STAR$ per $1 spent elsewhere. For selected merchants, under the STAR$ XTRA programme, this can go as high as 50 STAR$ per $1 spent. You can see more about the STAR$ rewards and benefits here; STAR$ can be redeemed for discount vouchers in various stores, or dining privileges like 1-for-1 meals.
Spend at least $888 in the first six months, and you’ll also get a $60 voucher, usable at CapitaLand malls.
With a spend of $1,500 per month, you’ll also get three-hour complimentary parking at CapitaLand malls. That’ll come in handy as we get near Christmas. First time applicants to American Express also get an $80 Starbucks card.
