12 things in JB that is a lot cheaper than Singapore
Every Singaporean loves crossing over to Johor Bahru as much as possible to pick up items that are cheaper (due to the currency exchange).
Some do it weekly, some do it monthly. We can all admit we’ve done it more than once.
But is everything really worth buying in JB? Here’s a list of 12 things you should spend on the next time you’re in JB:
If you wear disposable contact lenses, then buying your contact lenses in JB makes sense. A box of contact lens in Singapore can cost about S$40 but it is only about S$30 in JB. If you are buying a year’s worth, that will save you up to S$120!
Medication and supplements
You can stock up on contraceptives, antihistamines, supplements and other over-the-counter medication in JB because it’ll be MUCH cheaper there. For example, a box of contraceptives from the doctor (with a prescription) in Singapore will cost about S$25, but only costs about S$12 in JB.
A movie ticket in JB will only cost you about S$4-5, which is so much cheaper than ANY cinema in Singapore. Even on weekends when the price may go up to S$6, you’re still saving a lot.
When the charges are pretty much dollar for dollar, you’re saving up to HALF your bill when you get your hair done in JB. Plus there is an abundance of hair salons right across the border, so you won’t have to wait too long.
Drug store cosmetics
If you’re not too fussy with makeup and tend to get your stash from places like Guardian or Watson’s, then stock up in JB instead. You will be saving up to 70% of the price.
You might have to be really careful when it comes to this (because of the recent fake milk powder scandal). But if you buy authentic milk powder from the supermarkets in JB, you will be saving almost 40%.
Shampoo and other hygiene products
Toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel… these are all items we use daily. We don’t have to buy it very often so the savings may not be quite as much as other everyday items, but if you do pick them up in JB, you will be saving quite a few dollars (about 50% of the price!).
Stuff from Sephora
Sephora is every woman’s dream shop but the damage to our wallets in there can be detrimental for months. But you can go to JB’s Sephora and go a little crazier without the same amount of guilt because the exchange rate will save you some money!
Thinking of getting braces done? Consider doing it in JB. Yes, it is a little inconvenient to have to make monthly visits to the dentist, but if you’re going in every month anyway, it will save you so much to get your orthodontic work done there. The cost of getting braces done in Singapore range from S$3,500 to S$6,000 whereas you can get braces done for about RM7,000 (approx. S$2,300) in JB.

If you are driving in, then buying groceries can make sense. Groceries are SO much cheaper in JB – you will save more than 50% on buying your foodstuff and household products in JB.

If you love going for massages and to the spa, then head to JB to do it instead. Again, the prices are almost dollar for dollar, saving you up to three times the cost!
