It’s Not Just Mont Blanc! Three High-Grade Fountain Pens that Sell For Crazy Amounts of Money
For those who establish themselves in life through writing, pens are extremely important partners that transmit their thoughts into the world. The special feeling that even the author has for a fountain pen is very deep. For writers, Mont Blanc fountain pens are a source of envy!
In popularity or brand power, Mont Blanc is at the level of the best in the world, but the world of fountain pens is vast. There are many fountain pens that do not match up to Mont Blanc, but there are a number of pens that each exceed hundreds of thousands of yen.
What exactly is different for a high-grade fountain pen?
Many people long for fountain pens but cannot buy them because the prices are high. Firstly, let us discuss the differences between high-grade fountain pens and ordinary ball-point pens.
As the name suggests, a ball-point pen is a pen with a ball attached to its tip. If one runs the pen over the paper, the ink is transferred by the rotation of the ball. It is extremely simple, and because of this, the manufacturing costs are low. No matter how high-grade the ball-point pen is, there is no major difference in the construction to write characters. It is only that the materials are of a high quality or that there are differences in the ink.
However, for fountain pens, the manufacturing is fundamentally different from that of ball-point pens. When compared with ball-point pens, their construction is complex with many parts. The ink is packed into the pen shaft, and when the pen is applied to paper, the ink flows out little by little. The more one uses a fountain pen, the more it becomes familiar with the writing habits or the hand of the person writing.
The pleasant feeling of a fountain pen’s writing certainly cannot be understood except by those who have experienced it. When I first used a fountain pen, I was surprised at how smoothly it wrote as if gliding on ice, without it needing any writing pressure at all. Now, I am thoroughly captivated by fountain pens, and I do not feel like using ball-point pens.
The world’s high-grade fountain pen makers
With Mont Blanc first on the list, there are many other high-grade fountain pen brands. Here are three other high-grade fountain pen makers:
Parker, established in 1888, is a maker of high-grade writing instruments and purveyor to the imperial household of the UK. It is not just because of its many fans around the world, but also its old history that it has been used in numerous famous historical scenes. Among them is the story that Supreme Commander MacArthur used a Parker pen at the 1945 signing ceremony at the end of the Pacific War. Reasonable Parker pens sell from just over S$35, but the more expensive pens sell from roughly S$1,250 and tens of thousands of dollars. The differences in price are decidedly due to the differences in materials, such as 18-carat gold and Rhodium being used in the body or the nib.
Pelikan, established in 1832, is a company that is headquartered in Switzerland and has an even older history than Parker. Globally, it boasts brand power that does not match Mont Blanc or Parker, having high popularity especially in Europe (it earns 50% of its sales there). Also, Pelikan is known for having been the favorite of many literary masters or people of culture, starting with Natsume Soseki.
For Pelikan’s high-grade fountain pens, –the cost ranges from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars, again depending on the difference in materials, such as 18-carat gold which is used in the body.
Delta has its headquarters in Italy and was established in 1982. Artisans of South Italy hand-make them. In a famous historical scene, in Naples, Italy in 1994, the pens were used in the signing ceremony of the G-7 Summit’s heads of state.
Due to Delta’s brand power, there are no “low-priced items.” Whereas Parker or Pelikan also have pens from more reasonable prices, Delta starts at over S$100, and many in the line-up are quite expensive at S$300 or S$500. It goes without saying that because mass-production cannot be done, the pens are very much in a price band that ordinary people cannot afford.
They even become a part of self-branding
Even though these makers produce high-grade fountain pens, many other makers exist around the world. Many people spend money on bags or clothes, but there are not many people who can invest in a fountain pen. For that reason, with a single fountain pen one’s superiority is acknowledged and can promote being particularly intelligent or wealthy.
